Because I want to look cute. I also want to eat dinner.

I'm a wife.

I'm a mom.

I'm a full-time people leader.

And somewhere in between work, family, errands, laundry and everything else that fills a week, my husband and I occasionally manage to go on an actual date.

Which presents another question:

What am I wearing?

Because I want date night to feel different.

I want to put on something pretty.

I want to do my hair, add some jewelry and feel like I made an effort.

But at this point in my life, I have absolutely no interest in spending the evening adjusting my clothes, worrying about whether something is riding up or discovering halfway through dinner that the waistband of my pants has declared war on me.

I want to feel attractive.

I want to feel current.

But mostly?

I want to feel like myself.

So I've started thinking about date-night clothes a little differently.

I don't need a closet full of "going out" clothes.

I need a few outfit formulas that make getting ready easy.

01 The Great Jeans + Pretty Top Formula

This is probably the easiest date-night outfit there is.

Start with jeans that make you feel good.

Then add the thing you wouldn't necessarily wear to the grocery store.

A silky blouse.

A little lace.

An interesting neckline.

A beautiful sleeve.

Something with texture.

Maybe even a little sparkle.

Add earrings and a good shoe and you're done.

It's not revolutionary.

It just works.

02 The Black Pants Outfit

Black pants are not just for work.

The trick is changing everything you put around them.

Instead of the work blouse and blazer, try:

Black trousers.

A fitted knit or slightly sexy top.

Gold jewelry.

A great bag.

Heeled boots or pointed flats.

Suddenly the pants you wore to Tuesday's meeting have an entirely different personality.

And I love anything that makes my closet work harder.

03 The Easy Dress

There is a lot to be said for one piece of clothing.

No coordinating.

No tucking.

No wondering which top works with which pants.

Dress.

Shoes.

Earrings.

Done.

I particularly like midi dresses because they can go in so many directions.

Casual restaurant? Flats and a denim jacket.

Nice dinner? Heels or pointed shoes and jewelry.

Winery? Boots and a cardigan.

Weekend away? Throw the same dress in the suitcase.

An easy midi dress that looks like you tried considerably harder than you did.

04 The Sweater + Jeans Date

Not every date requires a dress.

Sometimes we're going to a winery.

Or a little restaurant.

Or wandering around a town and getting dinner afterward.

Or it's November and I'm simply not interested in being cold for fashion.

This is where a beautiful sweater earns its place.

Give me a soft sweater with an interesting neckline, a little off-the-shoulder moment or a flattering shape.

Add jeans, boots and earrings.

Comfortable.

Pretty.

Easy.

A soft sweater that's cozy without looking like something you wore to clean the house.

05 The Leather-Look Jacket

This is one of the easiest ways to make basics feel like a date-night outfit.

Jeans + simple top + jacket.

Dress + jacket.

Black pants + tank + jacket.

Instantly a little cooler.

And no, I don't think there's an age when you're suddenly required to hand over your leather jacket.

06 The Shoe Question

Here is my date-night shoe requirement:

I need to be able to walk.

That's it.

I am not spending half the evening wondering how soon I can get back to the car and remove my shoes.

Fortunately, cute no longer has to mean four-inch heels.

I'll take:

A pointed flat.

A kitten heel.

A block heel.

A loafer.

A sleek ankle boot.

A pretty sandal.

Something that finishes the outfit without becoming the main event of my evening.

Little Edit Pick — $

A pointed flat that works with jeans, trousers and dresses.

Little Edit Upgrade — $$

A sleek knee-high boot that instantly dresses up jeans or a dress while still being comfortable enough to actually enjoy the night.

07 The Bag That Isn't My Everyday Bag

This makes more difference than you might think.

My everyday bag contains my life.

Date night does not require my life.

I don't need the receipts.

I don't need six pens.

I don't need the random charger.

I don't need whatever mystery object has been sitting at the bottom for three months.

Phone.

Wallet.

Lipstick.

Glasses.

Done.

A smaller bag immediately makes the outfit feel more like I'm going somewhere.

Little Edit Pick — $

A small crossbody that leaves your hands free and works with almost everything.

Little Edit Upgrade — $$

A structured little bag that makes jeans and a simple top look considerably more polished.

08 Earrings Do a Lot of Heavy Lifting

If I'm wearing a simple outfit, this is where I have fun.

Gold hoops.

Statement earrings.

Something sparkly.

Something slightly bigger than I'd wear to work.

You can wear a $25 black top and make it look completely different with the right earrings.

That's the kind of fashion math I appreciate.

Little Edit Pick — $

A pair of gold hoops that works with practically every date-night outfit.

[Shop the Little Edit Pick →] Large Gold Hoops

Little Edit Pick — $

A statement earring for nights when the rest of the outfit is simple.

09 A Necklace That Works With Everything

I'm not looking for a jewelry box full of pieces I wear once.

Give me a simple necklace I can wear with a blouse, sweater, dress or T-shirt.

Maybe something layered.

Maybe a pendant.

Maybe a slightly chunkier gold chain.

The goal isn't to overwhelm the outfit.

It's that little finishing detail that makes it look like I actually got dressed on purpose.

Little Edit Pick — $

An everyday necklace that transitions easily from work to date night.

10 The Finishing Touch: Lip Color

This isn't technically an outfit.

But it counts.

There is something about putting on a little more lip color than I normally wear that immediately says:

We're going somewhere.

It could be a soft rose.

A berry.

A classic red.

Whatever makes you feel good.

And if I'm going to dinner, my only real requirement is that it doesn't disappear before the appetizers arrive.

An easy, wearable lip color you don't need a makeup artist to apply.

My Real-Life Date Night Outfit Formulas

Because I don't want to stand in front of my closet while my husband asks if I'm ready every seven minutes.

Dinner Somewhere Casual

Great jeans + pretty blouse + pointed flats + hoops + crossbody

Winery Date

Jeans + beautiful sweater + boots + jacket + simple jewelry

Nice Dinner

Midi dress + low heel + statement earrings + small bag

Concert or Show

Black trousers + fitted top + leather-look jacket + boots + earrings

Little-Town Date

Jeans + knit top + jacket + comfortable loafers or boots + crossbody

Anniversary Dinner

Dress + pretty shoes + jewelry + small structured bag

"We Have an Hour Before the Movie Starts"

Jeans + elevated T-shirt + blazer + flats + earrings

And yes, sometimes the date is dinner and Target.

I'm still putting on the earrings.

I Don't Want to Look Younger

This is something I've thought about more as I've gotten older.

I'm not trying to dress like I'm 25.

But I'm also not interested in someone telling me that because I'm over 40, certain things are no longer "appropriate."

I don't need my clothes to make me look younger.

I want them to make me feel good now.

There's a difference.

I still like pretty things.

I still like feeling attractive.

I still like getting dressed up for my husband.

And I still like catching my reflection before we leave and thinking:

Okay. I look good.

That feeling doesn't have an expiration date.

Date Night Doesn't Have to Mean a New Outfit

This may be the biggest thing I've learned.

I don't need to buy something every time we go somewhere.

Most of the time, the pieces are already in my closet.

The jeans.

The black pants.

The dress.

The sweater.

What changes the outfit are the smaller things.

The earrings.

The bag.

The shoe.

The jacket.

The lipstick.

Those are also the pieces I don't mind spending a little money on because I can use them again and again.

I'd rather own one great pair of earrings I wear twenty times than another top that gets worn once and disappears into the back of the closet.

And Sometimes Date Night Is at Home

This might be my favorite part.

You don't actually have to go anywhere to make a night feel different.

Make pasta.

Open a bottle of wine.

Put together a cheese board.

Turn off the overhead lights.

Put music on.

Eat somewhere other than in front of the television.

And yes—change clothes.

I'm not saying you need to put on heels to eat spaghetti in your own dining room.

But changing out of whatever you've been wearing all day can create a surprisingly clear dividing line between:

We're home tonight.

and

We're having a date at home tonight.

Sometimes that's all it takes.

The Best Date-Night Outfit Is the One You Forget About

I don't want to spend dinner thinking about my clothes.

I want to think about the person sitting across from me.

I want to laugh.

Eat something good.

Have a glass of wine.

Talk about something other than schedules and responsibilities.

Maybe walk around somewhere afterward.

Maybe stop for dessert.

Maybe be home by 9:30 because we're tired.

That's real life.

And that's what I want my clothes to work for.

Pretty enough to make the evening feel special.

Comfortable enough to enjoy it.

Affordable enough that I don't feel ridiculous for buying it.

And most importantly—

Something that still feels like me.

Because the point isn't really the outfit.

It's remembering that underneath all the other roles I have in my life, I'm still a woman who likes getting dressed up and going on a date with her husband.

And I think that's worth making a little room for too.
