Polished. Comfortable. Current. Reasonably priced. And absolutely nothing I have to tug at all day.
I'm a wife.
I'm a mom.
I'm also a full-time people leader in my 40s.
And somewhere between getting everyone where they need to be, answering messages, sitting through meetings, leading a team and occasionally having to stand in front of a room full of people, I still have to get dressed.
I want to look professional.
I want to look fashionable.
I want to feel confident when I walk into a meeting.
But I also want to be comfortable.
And I don't particularly want to spend $200 on a pair of pants to accomplish it.
At this point in my life, I've realized I'm not looking for a huge work wardrobe.
I'm looking for easy outfit formulas that work.
The kind where I can stand in front of my closet at 7:00 in the morning and put something together without conducting a 20-minute strategy session.
So these are the pieces I actually want in my work wardrobe now.
01 The Pants That Do Most of the Work
Let's start with the foundation.
Give me a pair of trousers that look tailored but don't feel tailored.
I want a comfortable waistband.
I want fabric with a little movement.
I would very much like pockets.
And I'd prefer not to look like I've slept in them after sitting at my desk for three hours.
A great pair of black, navy, camel or chocolate trousers can be worn with almost everything else in your closet.
Wide-leg and relaxed tailored trousers continue to be particularly useful because they can look polished without feeling restrictive.

02 The Blazer That Doesn't Feel Like a Suit
I don't want to feel like I'm putting on a costume every time I wear a blazer.
I want one that's structured enough to say I have this handled but relaxed enough to wear over a simple T-shirt.
That's the beauty of a good blazer.
Black pants + T-shirt + blazer.
Dress + blazer.
Dark jeans + blouse + blazer.
Suddenly everything looks intentional.
And that's exactly what I need from my closet.

A relaxed blazer that can live at the office and rescue almost any outfit. This one is a bit more than the upgrade, but it is more relaxed and comfy.

03 The Elevated Basic Top
Not every work shirt needs a bow, ruffle, elaborate sleeve or complicated neckline.
Sometimes I just need a really good top.
A soft knit.
A simple shell.
A flattering V-neck.
A crisp shirt.
Something that works under a blazer but still looks finished when I take the blazer off.
I especially like pieces that can go from work to dinner without screaming WORK BLOUSE.
Little Edit Pick — $
A simple elevated knit or blouse that works with trousers, skirts and jeans. I absolutely love this top. It is flattering, feminine and looks great with everything!

04 The Dress That Requires Almost No Thought
There are mornings when coordinating separates is simply asking too much.
This is why I love a good work dress.
One piece.
Shoes.
Jewelry.
Done.
I'm looking for something with enough structure to look professional but enough comfort that I don't spend the entire day thinking about what I'm wearing.
A midi dress, wrap-style dress or simple knit dress can work beautifully.
Add a blazer or cardigan when you need another layer.

05 The Cardigan That Doesn't Look Like an Afterthought
Office temperature is apparently determined by someone who believes we're storing frozen food.
So yes, I need a layer.
But I want a cardigan that looks like part of the outfit—not something I grabbed because I was freezing.
A sweater blazer is especially good for this.
You get the polish of a jacket without quite as much structure.
Little Edit Pick — $
A simple cardigan with enough shape to work over dresses and trousers. I have this one in red and get compliments every time I wear it!

Now Let's Talk About Shoes
I am no longer interested in suffering for footwear.
There.
I said it.
I need shoes I can wear to a meeting, walk through an airport in, stand around talking to people in and still tolerate several hours later.
Fortunately, polished work shoes no longer automatically mean high heels. Loafers, Mary Janes and flats are all prominent in current workwear styling.
06 A Really Good Loafer
Loafers might be the workwear MVP.
They're polished.
They're comfortable.
They work with trousers, dresses, skirts and even jeans.
And they instantly make a fairly basic outfit look more finished.

07 The Flat That Doesn't Look Boring
Sometimes I want something a little more feminine.
Enter the pointed flat or Mary Jane.
They give trousers and dresses a completely different look without requiring a heel.
And this is also an easy place to introduce a little color.
Burgundy, for example, is particularly easy to wear with black, camel, cream, navy and denim.

A simple pointed flat or Mary Jane for everyday office outfits. These are my go to office flats, I buy them on repeat whenever I need a new pair.

The Accessories Are What Make the Outfit
This might be my favorite part.
Because you can wear the same black pants and cream sweater over and over again and make them feel different just by changing what's around them.
And accessories are often much cheaper than constantly buying new clothes.
08 A Belt
This is one of those little things I used to overlook.
But add a belt to trousers and a tucked-in shirt and suddenly the outfit looks finished.
Wear one over a dress.
Add one to dark jeans on a casual workday.
It doesn't have to be expensive.
It just needs to look good.

09 Simple Gold or Silver Jewelry
I don't need a different necklace for every outfit.
Give me a few pieces I can wear constantly.
Small hoops.
A simple chain.
A delicate bracelet.
Maybe a slightly bolder earring for days when the rest of the outfit is simple.
These are the finishing touches that make basics feel intentional.
Little Edit Pick — $
Simple everyday hoops that work with almost everything.

10 A Watch
Yes, my phone tells time.
That's not really the point.
A watch is jewelry that happens to be useful.
And I think there's something about adding one to trousers, loafers and a simple blouse that makes the whole outfit feel pulled together.
Little Edit Pick — $$
A classic everyday watch with a simple face and neutral band.

11 A Work Tote That Can Handle My Actual Life
My work bag needs to hold more than a wallet and lipstick.
Laptop.
Notebook.
Chargers.
Water bottle.
Glasses.
Random papers.
Probably a snack.
Possibly something belonging to somebody else that somehow ended up in there.
But I still want it to look polished.
A structured tote is one of the easiest ways to make even a simple outfit look more professional. It's also showing up heavily in current workwear styling.

My Work Outfit Formulas
This is the part that actually makes getting dressed easier.
I don't want to reinvent my style every morning.
I want formulas.
The Regular Workday
Tailored trousers + knit top + loafers + earrings
The Important Meeting
Tailored trousers + blouse + blazer + pointed flats + watch
The I-Have-No-Idea-What-to-Wear Day
Midi dress + cardigan + loafers + simple jewelry
The Casual Office Day
Dark jeans + elevated T-shirt + blazer + loafers + belt
The Presentation Day
Monochromatic trousers and top + blazer + statement earrings + structured tote
The After-Work-Plans Day
Trousers + soft blouse + flats + jewelry + great bag
The individual pieces aren't particularly exciting.
That's exactly why they work.
I Don't Want to Dress "For My Age"
I don't want a list telling me what women over 40 aren't supposed to wear.
I'm not particularly interested in dressing younger.
I'm also not interested in dressing older.
I want to dress like me.
Current style advice increasingly emphasizes dressing for comfort, personal style and the realities of your day rather than trying to make yourself look smaller or following arbitrary age rules.
At this point, I know more about what I like.
I know what I'll actually wear.
I know which shoes will sit untouched in my closet no matter how beautiful they are.
And I know that if something requires constant adjusting, uncomfortable shapewear and the inability to eat lunch, I'm probably not wearing it again.
I want clothes that let me walk into a room and think about the people I'm there to lead—not about my waistband.
Looking Put Together Doesn't Have to Cost a Fortune
This is where I think we sometimes get workwear wrong.
You don't need twenty expensive outfits.
You need a handful of pieces that play nicely together.
Two or three trousers.
A couple of dresses.
Good basic tops.
One or two blazers.
A cardigan.
Comfortable shoes.
A bag you love.
Then use accessories to change things up.
I'd rather have ten pieces I wear constantly than thirty things hanging in my closet with the tags still attached.
And I'd much rather spend $35 on something I wear twice a week than $150 on something I save for "someday."
Because my clothes have a job to do too.
They need to help me feel comfortable, current and confident.
Then they need to get out of the way so I can do mine.
